Genre Lists

One of your assignments requires that you read 80 picture books, ten each across eight different genres.  To help you, Dick Smith Library staff have created spreadsheets with lists of books in our collection that meet these criteria.  Except where indicated, all of these books can be found in the Curriculum Collection on the lower level of the Dick Smith Library.  Links to these spreadsheets are on this page, and paper copies are available in a binder on the library's lower level.

You can download these spreadsheets to your computer or H drive and use them any way you like - print them out, sort and group the data in different ways (by author or Accelerated Reader grade level, for example).  The spreadsheets will be updated as we acquire more books or information (for example, many of the books currently aren't in Accelerated Reader, but may be in the future).  Check the date at the top of the spreadsheet (and next to it on the list below) to make sure you have the latest information!

Things to remember:

1.  Sometimes it's hard to figure out if a book is a chapter book or a picture book.  Sometimes it can be considered to be both.  Sometimes it's hard to figure out a book's genre.  Often a book will fit in more than one genre (for example, traditional literature in a poetry format).  The information in these lists for type of book and genre comes from other sources (such as Lisa Bartle's Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature, and Donna Norton's Through the Eyes of a Child: An Introduction to Children's Literature, 7th edition, and its accompanying CD).  If you find an error or think a book belongs in a different genre or type, please contact Special Services Librarian Amanda Pape.

2.  In an effort to help you determine reading grade levels and age interest levels, we have used data from the Accelerated Reader (AR) program when available.  For interest levels, "lower" means grades K-3, "middle" means grades 4-8, and "upper" means grades 9-12.

3.  Check back often for updates - the name of the Excel 2003 spreadsheet will include the genre and the last date it was revised.
